"The Essential Critiques series introduces students to the concept of critical analysis and how to use it to process films, music, and other pop-culture media. The idea is to get kids thinking about what they’ve seen or heard and, by doing research, learn which influences might have been brought to bear on an artist’s creation. Each subject is introduced with a short biography. Then several of their projects are analyzed in various ways. Each book explains the various types of criticism and breaks down the arguments into digestible bits. Terrific photos accompany each book."
Famous film directors, actors, authors, artists, and musicians take the stage in this unique series. Essential Critiques explores the creative works of pop culture icons in theater, literature, film, art, and music. Each book gives an examination and criticism of four individual works by the book's subject, as well as background biographical information. The "how to" approach helps readers identify a thesis and supporting arguments while strengthening critical thinking skills. A timeline and list of works concludes each book, as well as "You Critique It," inviting readers to analyze other creative works on their own. Essential Critiques is a series in Essential Library, an imprint of ABDO Publishing Company.
